Johnson?s father died when Johnson was just three years old and several years later his mother remarried. The family never had much money and, following the customs of the times, apprenticed Johnson and his brother to a tailor when Johnson was fourteen. He later ran away from his apprenticeship and under the law he was the equivalent of a runaway slave. When he was seventeen he set up his own tailor shop in Greeneville, Tennessee.
