In 1942, Anne received a book for her thirteenth birthday that she decided to use as a diary. In July of 1942, Margot Frank received a notice that ordered her to report for relocation to a work camp. Instead, the Frank family went into hiding. The Franks left their apartment messy to indicate that they left suddenly, and Otto Frank left a note that hinted that they were fleeing to Switzerland.
The Franks hid in the Achterhuis, which is a Dutch word that identifies the rear of a house. It was located above the Opekta offices, where Otto Frank had worked. A few employees knew of their hiding and helped them by supplying food. On July 13, the van Pels family joined the Franks in hiding. In November, Fritz Pfeffer also joined the group.
