Excerpt
The Atlantic Ocean is an S-shaped body of salt water that lies between four continents: Europe and Africa to the east and North and South America to the west. It extends to the southern edge of the Arctic Ocean, in the vicinity of the island of Greenland, to the north. The Atlantic Ocean adjoins the Southern Ocean to the south at 60 degrees south latitude, which roughly coincides with the southern tip of South America. The Atlantic Ocean merges with the Pacific Ocean below the southern tip of South America and with the Indian Ocean below the southern tip of Africa. The equator divides the Atlantic Ocean roughly in the middle and the two halves are called the North Atlantic and South Atlantic.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, abbreviated NATO, is an alliance between the countries bordering on the North Atlantic. NATO includes North American members Canada and the United States along with twenty-six European countries. European members have a coastline bordering the North Atlantic or a border on the north coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
