Excerpt
Ornithologists have divided the class of birds into two main groups. The first is called the paleognathae. This is a Latin word meaning "old jaw," and these birds are grouped together because of the shape of their jaw. The birds in this group are also flightless, which means that even though they have wings, they do not fly. Many of the birds in this group have long, strong legs that enable them to run at fast speeds. Some species in this group include emus, kiwis, and ostriches.
