Chester Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont on October 5, 1829 to a large family where he was the fifth of eight children. The son of a Baptist minister, Arthur moved with his family to a variety of Baptist churches located in Vermont and the state of New York. He attended Union College in New York and graduated in 1848. He passed the bar exam in 1854 and became a law clerk with a prestigious law firm in New York City where he became involved in two important civil rights cases.
