Even though the land known today as the state of Illinois was claimed first by France in 1671 and then came under British control after the French and Indian War (1754 ? 1763), only trappers and fur traders ventured to this remote land. In fact, the small number of French settlers in Illinois moved westward to avoid British rule after the French and Indian War. Illinois remained a wilderness area and prior to the American Revolution was part of the province of Quebec. During the Revolutionary War, Illinois became part of the Virginia colony and after the original thirteen states were formed, the area between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, which includes Illinois, was called the Northwest Territory. But few settlers ventured across the Appalachian Mountains and present-day Ohio and Indiana to reach Illinois.
