Heliocentric and Geocentric Models
About the Heliocentric and Geocentric Models Lesson
This lesson is designed to be an introduction to the geocentric and heliocentric models.
• To be able to define geocentrism and heliocentrism.
• To be able to identify some of the heliocentric astronomers.
• To be able to describe the shift from geocentrism to heliocentrism.
The geocentric model of the universe holds that earth is the center of the universe and other objects orbit around it. This belief system was popular in ancient Greece. The majority of ancient philosophers (like Aristotle and Ptolemy) thought that the sun, moon, stars, and planets revolved around Earth.
