Excerpt
The eight parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences. Without them, there can be no spoken or written word. Here are the basic five:
1. Nouns: the naming words;
2. Verbs: the action words;
3. Pronouns: the words that take the place of nouns;
4. Adjectives: the describing words;
5. Adverbs: the words that describe verbs, adverbs and adjectives.
These five parts of speech are called the foundation five. There are more nouns than any other words in the English language. We need verbs to form sentences. Pronouns keep us from having to repeat nouns, and adjectives and adverbs add interest and color. But there are three more parts of speech which are like glue. They join things together.
1. Prepositions. These are words that show the relationship of one word in the sentence to another. They can tell us four things: location, direction, time, and relationship.
