Excerpt
Idaho is located on the Canadian border in the far western portion of the United States. Idaho is surrounded by six other states: Montana and Wyoming to the east; Nevada and Utah to the south; and Washington and Oregon to the west. The Bitterroot Mountains and the Rocky Mountain continental divide create the jagged border between Idaho?s northern panhandle and Montana. The Snake River crosses southern Idaho in an east-west direction as well as forming a portion of the north-south border between Idaho and its western neighbors.
Early History
Long before the arrival of European explorers or settlers, Idaho was home to Native Americans. The two major groups residing in the southern area of today?s Idaho were the Shoshone and the Northern Paiutes.
