James Madison was born on March 16, 1751 in rural Virginia, one of eight children. His father inherited a significant amount of money and his mother came from a wealthy family. Madison grew up in the family?s mansion, Montpelier, situated on a Virginia plantation. However, Madison was a frail child who stayed close to his mother and preferred reading to being outdoors. He was taught at home by private tutors and then entered the College of New Jersey, later renamed Princeton University. His family?s wealth allowed him to pursue his interests.
