Excerpt
Kansas is located in the center of the lower 48 states of the United States. In fact there is a plaque in Lebanon, Kansas marking the spot that is supposed to be the geographic center of the United States as calculated in the late 1800s before Alaska and Hawaii were states. Kansas is bordered by Oklahoma to the south; Colorado to the west; Nebraska to the north; and Missouri to the east. The western two-thirds of Kansas is part of the Great Plains, an area that is dry and flat, while the flat land in the east is fertile soil well-suited for farming. The weather is often windy and tornadoes develop easily; Kansas is situated in Tornado Alley, a portion of the U.S. that is prone to tornadoes. Kansas can experience hot summers and blizzard conditions in winter.
