About the Making Maps Lesson
This lesson introduces the science of cartography. The reading can be used by the teacher to initiate a discussion on maps or as part of a paired or individual reading exercise.
• to help the children understand that a map shows how a place looks from above;
• to explain the use of symbols on a map;
• to explain how to use the compass rose to find directions on a map.
The science of making maps is called cartography. Maps have been made for thousands of years. The oldest maps we know of were drawn on clay tablets around 2300 BC!
