Excerpt
Maryland, one of the smallest states in land area, is located on the east coast of the United States. Due its size and shape, Maryland has a short coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Instead Maryland?s ocean access is dominated by the Chesapeake Bay which divides the state, leaving a narrow midpoint. Chesapeake Bay is defined as an estuary, meaning it is a mixture of fresh water arriving from the rivers that empty into the bay as well as salt water from the Atlantic. The Potomac River forms Maryland?s southern border with West Virginia and Virginia and the river?s wide mouth empties into Chesapeake Bay.
Since the Potomac River meanders, a portion of the western tip of Maryland is just two miles wide between the river and Maryland?s northern border with Pennsylvania.
