New York is the third most populous state in the United States, and the capitol of New York is Albany. New York City is the largest city in New York and has the highest population of any city in the United States. New York City and the state of New York were both named after the 17th century Duke of York, James Stuart.
New York City has a history of being a gateway for immigration to the United States. At the mouth of the Hudson River, Ellis Island is located. Ellis Island was the main point of entry for immigrants coming to the United States from January 1, 1892, until November 12, 1954. New York City has also been a cultural, financial and manufacturing center.
