Oklahoma is located in the south central part of the United States. Oklahoma has an unusual shape, looking like a cooking pot. In fact the long narrow portion of the state in called the Panhandle region. Arkansas and a small part of Missouri lie to the east; Kansas and one corner of Colorado are to the north; New Mexico adjoins the tip of the Panhandle to the west; while Texas lies to the south. The Red River forms the southern border between Oklahoma and Texas, along the ?pot base.?
Early History
Historians tell us that modern Native American people had developed settlements in the area of Oklahoma by the year 800 CE. Wichitas lived in the river valleys in northern Oklahoma.
