The Olympic Games were a religious festival at the temple of Zeus in Olympia to honor the Greek gods Zeus and Hera. Before the games, messengers were sent all over Greece and a truce was declared for a month. This means that no matter which city state in Greece was at war, during the Olympics there would be a truce for a period of a month. Only free Greek citizens were allowed to participate in the Olympics.
