Policy typically means a general plan or method that governs specific actions. Governments have policies that tell us how issues are handled, both within their own countries and with foreign countries. A nation?s policy regarding home issues is called domestic policy. A nation?s policy regarding issues with foreign countries is called foreign policy. In other words, in the United States, domestic policy is the term used to refer to policies regarding issues that happen in the US. Foreign policy refers to the nation?s policies regarding all other countries.

The main goal of domestic policy is to maintain and improve the quality of life for US citizens. Policies can change over time, but the goal always remains the same. There are many different domestic policies, but the issues can typically be divided into five categories.
