Rud, as he was called, was a sickly child and spent most of his early years in the company of his sister Fanny. The children first attended a local school but, with the help of their uncle, were able to study at a private school. Hayes graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in 1842 as the valedictorian of the class. Again with the help of his uncle, Hayes completed Harvard Law School in 1845.
