South Carolina is located on the east coast of the United States between North Carolina and Georgia. The Savannah River forms the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina. South Carolina?s coast faces the Atlantic Ocean and is subject to hurricanes that travel up the coast from Florida or come in from the ocean.
Early History of South Carolina
South Carolina was settled by Native American people thousands of years ago. Historians believe that people settled in the area around 8000 BCE in what they call the Archaic Period. One of the remnants of this period is the Spanish Mount, a misnomer because it is not related to Spain at all, which was built around 2000 BCE. The remaining Spanish Mount is a large ring made of shells, about ten feet high and sixty-five feet in length, and it is located in Edisto Beach State Park.
