Verbs are the action words in a sentence. When a verb behaves like a verb, it is easy to spot. Look for the word in the sentence that answers the question: What happens? But, how do you find a verb when it pretends to be another part of speech? Can that happen? Yes it can!
Sometimes verbs act like other parts of speech like nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. When a verb does not behave like a verb, we give it another name. There are three verb pretenders, also known as verbals:
1. infinitives
2. gerunds
3. participles
INFINITIVES are verbs that combine a verb and the word to. They can act like nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
