Excerpt
The Titanic was a British-registered ship. It was built for transatlantic travel between Southampton, England and New York. The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. At the time, it was the largest ship in the world, and was considered to be ?unsinkable?. This luxury ship had cafes, libraries, squash courts, a barbershop, and a swimming pool. It began its maiden voyage from Southampton on April 10, 1912. There were many wealthy people aboard the Titanic. It was considered a floating palace. The ship had fine wood and gold chandeliers. The wealthy traveled on the upper decks, and the crew and the poorer passengers lived on the lower decks.
By April 14th, the Titanic was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A sailor spotted something in the darkness shortly before midnight that same night. He knew if could only be an iceberg. An iceberg is a large, floating chunk of ice that has broken away from a glacier. Hitting an iceberg can cause damage to any ship. The sailor sounded the alarm to alert the crew that an iceberg was ahead.
