Grant was a small and quiet child and the children at school called him ?Useless? instead of Ulysses. However, Grant had a knack for working with horses and as a youth he became known for his skill at managing unruly horses. Grant did not want to work in his father?s leather tanning business. Unbeknownst to Grant his father applied to the local Congressman for an appointment to the United States Military Academy so Grant could attend college. When the appointment materialized Grant did not want to leave Ohio but he soon realized that he needed an education.
