Verbs are the action words in a sentence. No sentence is complete without a verb. We can write a sentence without the other seven parts of speech, but we cannot write a sentence without a verb. If we try, the words do not make complete sense. There are four important things to know about verbs:
1. NUMBER. This is easy to remember. If the word is singular, it means one. If the word is plural, it means more than one. A singular subject always requires a singular verb. A plural subject always requires a plural verb.
? She was taught spelling. Single subject, singular verb.
? They are taught spelling. Plural subject, plural verb.
Number does not change with every verb.
