Excerpt
Washington State is located in the northwest corner of the United States. It is bordered to the north by Canada and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. It has only two neighboring states: Idaho to the east and Oregon to the south. The Olympic Mountains occupy the Olympic Peninsula, a piece of Washington that is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west; the Juan de Fuca Strait to the north; and Puget Sound to the east. The western slopes of the Olympic Mountains exist in a temperate rainforest receiving an average of 142 inches of rain per year.
The Cascade Mountains run north and south through the approximate middle of Washington State. The Cascades not only make travel across the state difficult, especially historically in pioneer times, but also create two climate zones within the state.
