William Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 15, 1857 to a large family with two half brothers by his father s first marriage and two brothers and a sister. Taft s father was active in politics, serving as Secretary of War and then as Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant. His father also served as Ambassador to Austria-Hungary and Russia. As a boy, Taft enjoyed playing baseball and was a good player in spite of his weight problems. He was also a good student and he attended a private high school, graduating second in his class. He then graduated second in his class at Yale University after which he attended Cincinnati Law School, passing the bar exam in 1880.
